Why hold the General Estates for a Just Transition?
"There is a social consensus on the urgent need to recognise the climate crisis and the need to change course. Now is the time to rally as many people as possible around the path we need to take to meet the challenges of this century. This transformation will only be successful if it is understood, through the democratisation of public debate, but also if it is perceived as legitimate and fair in the efforts it requires, as well as in the effects it causes.
That is why we have resolutely chosen a just transition.
The aim of the General Estates and the conference is to organise this collective, democratic deliberation on the options for rallying around a desirable future, both socially and ecologically."
The four axes
This process led to the formulation of opinions and recommendations that served as input for the Conference for a Just Transition in Belgium.
High Committee
comprised experts specialising in social, economic, democratic innovation, and earth science issues. Together, they defined what a just transition would mean in Belgium, and what government levers need to be activated to make it a reality.
Forum
gathered and analysed the organized civil society's contribution to the topic of just transition.
The citizen's agora
comprised randomly selected citizens and diverse representatives of Belgium's society. Their mission was to answer the question "Under what conditions will the transition be fair?".
Federal public services
they specifically formulated recommendations for implementing a Just Transition policy at the federal level.
