About the Conference for a Just Transition

In its government agreement of 30 September 2020, the federal government indicated its intention to hold this conference in Belgium. The Federal Minister for Climate, Environment, Sustainable Development and the Green Deal, Zakia Khattabi, was in charge of organising the event. This is why she brought together political decision-makers from across the country, stakeholders, academic experts and citizens to discuss the crucial issues involved in the ecological transition, emphasising the importance of it taking place in a way that is just for everyone.

As the International Labor Organization's 2015 Just Transition Guidelines point out, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Policies must be adapted to the specific circumstances, culture and economic reality of each country. The conference had been intensively planned for two years by a diverse group of stakeholders, including academic experts, social partners, civil society, a panel of randomly selected citizens, civil servants and various advisory bodies. They drew up information reports that fed into the conference and the political choices that ensued.
